Even after all this time, the royal family had yet to make time to see Daniel. It was frustrating, if not for the fact that his days were packed with lessons on etiquette and delving. Eight days had passed since his talk with the guildmaster and finally, the Guild had informed him that they were ready to start the interviews for replacements to his party. The two replacements that he had to fill now.

In the meantime, Daniel had heard about the increased pressure his friends had faced to leave. Omrak had even grown quiet about how much he was being offered, while Asin rarely left the guildhall unless she was in the company of others. When Daniel had asked why, she had muttered something about matted fur and refused to expand further.

Lady Nyssa had been the least bothered it seemed with the entire issue, though she had taken to spending less time with the team as a whole. When pressed, she had muttered something about family and social obligations before changing the topic. With his recent lessons, Daniel could not help but sympathize a little more with her.

For the first time since they had arrived, outside of delving, the entire team was together. They had been provided one of the larger drawing rooms and the Guild had even provided refreshments, which Omrak was now busy devouring. Inside, the vice-guildmaster was looking around, the Lady Marshall waving Daniel over as he debated which seat to take in the opposed seating arrangement of couches that had been set up.

“Do you normally do all this?” Daniel said, knowing that the interviewees were all placed in a separate drawing room with even more refreshments within.

“Of course not. Most just get the smaller drawing room, if they even bother to ask,” Lady Marshall said. “But you’re our healer. And considering the class of people coming by, it’s to our advantage to put our best foot forward.”

“And mmmphhfff . . . good food it is!” Omrak said, around a stuffed mouth.

“She said foot, not food,” Daniel corrected.

The teenage Northerner just waved a fried breadstick at Daniel dismissively, to which the healer could only roll his eyes. His own stomach was tight with worry, driving away all appetite. In fact, he had twisted knots in his guts, making him consider using his Gift to ease his anxiety. Briefly.

“Now, I recommend you be in the middle. It is you they will be listening to and wanting to meet,” Lady Marshall was saying and Daniel forced himself to focus. “Your friends should not speak, especially Asin.”

“Why her?” Daniel frowned.

“Because she is a Beastkin and some of the nobles will be unhappy about that as it is,” Lady Marshall said.

“That sounds like a good reason for Asin to speak up more then,” Daniel said.

The aforementioned Catkin turned from where she was busy dipping thin slices of fried meat into a red sauce that made Daniel’s nose water even from the few feet that separated them. She shook her head quite vigorously at his suggestion, making Daniel grimace.
